Vastu Puja is a traditional Hindu ritual performed to seek the blessings of the Vastu Purusha, the deity of space, before moving into a new home or building. According to Vastu Shastra, every direction and corner of a building or home carries its own energies, and the arrangement of the structure can significantly impact the lives of the people living there. The Vastu Puja is believed to balance the energies in the space, remove any malefic influences, and attract good fortune, health, prosperity, and peace. It is traditionally performed before the Griha Pravesh (housewarming) or at the completion of a new building to ensure that the space supports the spiritual, physical, and emotional well-being of its inhabitants.
Rituals and Offerings:
- Preparation: The puja is performed at an auspicious time, ideally during a muhurta (a favorable time). The house or building is thoroughly cleaned, and a designated altar is set up with offerings of flowers, fruits, sandalwood paste, and incense. A Ganesha idol or Vastu Purusha yantra is placed in the center of the space to begin the ritual.
- Invocation: The priest or worshiper begins by invoking Lord Ganesha (the remover of obstacles) to ensure a smooth and successful ritual. Chanting of Vastu Mantras follows, calling upon the blessings of the Vastu Purusha.
- Offerings: Offerings like sugar, ghee, honey, coconut, and sesame seeds are made to the fire or to a sacred symbol of Vastu. The aim is to balance the five elements (earth, water, fire, air, and space) in the space being purified.
- Prayers and Blessings: Specific mantras are recited, such as the Vastu Shanti Mantra, to cleanse the home or building of any negative energy and invite positive influences. The priest may also perform havan (sacred fire ritual) to purify the surroundings.
- Concluding Rituals: The puja concludes with the offering of aarti and the distribution of prasad. The family members are blessed with good health, prosperity, and success in the new home or building.
