Vaikunta Ekadashi is one of the most sacred and spiritually uplifting days in the Hindu calendar, especially for devotees of Lord Vishnu. It falls on the 11th day (Ekadashi) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase) in the Margashirsha or Dhanur month (December–January). The highlight of this festival is the opening of the Vaikunta Dwara (the celestial gateway to Lord Vishnu’s abode) in Vishnu temples, symbolizing entry into the realm of divine bliss and liberation.
Significance of Vaikunta Ekadashi:
According to Hindu scriptures, observing this day with devotion and discipline grants moksha (liberation from the cycle of birth and death). It is believed that on this day, Lord Vishnu opened the gates of Vaikunta (His divine abode) for His devotees. Those who enter through the Vaikunta Dwara in temples are said to attain divine grace and spiritual upliftment.
Fasting on Vaikunta Ekadashi, chanting Lord Vishnu’s names, and engaging in prayer help cleanse sins and enhance inner purity. It is also believed to be the day when Lord Vishnu assumed His Mohini avatar to protect the universe.
Puja Rituals and Observances:
- Early Morning Rituals: Devotees wake up before sunrise, take a sacred bath, and wear traditional attire. Vishnu temples open the Vaikunta Dwara in the early hours, allowing devotees to walk through it in a spiritually symbolic procession.
- Alankaram and Archana: Lord Vishnu is adorned in beautiful attire (often as Maha Vishnu or Mohini), and special archanas and abhishekas (ritual baths) are performed.
- Fasting and Chanting: Devotees observe a full-day fast, abstaining from grains and rice, and engage in continuous chanting of Vishnu Sahasranamam, Om Namo Narayanaya, and other hymns.
- Night Vigil: Many remain awake through the night in bhajans, kirtans, and recitations of Vishnu Leelas, enhancing the spiritual atmosphere.
- Prasadam and Darshan: After the rituals, prasadam is offered and distributed. The most awaited moment is darshan through the Vaikunta Dwara, symbolizing one’s passage into divine consciousness.
Vaikunta Ekadashi is a divine opportunity to surrender to Lord Vishnu, receive His blessings, and elevate one’s soul toward peace and liberation.
