
Pitru Paksha, also known as Shraddha Paksha, is a solemn 16-day period in the Hindu lunar calendar dedicated to honoring and paying homage to one’s ancestors (Pitrs). It usually falls in the month of Bhadrapada (September–October), during the waning moon phase (Krishna Paksha).

- Devotees offer water mixed with sesame seeds, barley, and kusa grass to their ancestors by the riverbank or home altar.
- Pinda Daan (Offering Rice Balls):
- Special rice balls called pindas are offered as symbolic nourishment for the departed souls.
- Recitation of Mantras:
- Sacred mantras and hymns from the Garuda Purana and other scriptures are chanted to invoke blessings.
- Feeding Brahmins and Needy:
- Offering food, clothes, and donations to Brahmins and the poor is an important part of the rituals.
- Performing Shraddha Ceremony:
- The main ritual involves invoking the presence of ancestors, offering pindas and water, and seeking their blessings.

- Many devotees observe fasts and dedicate the period to prayer and reflection on family lineage and duties.
