Navratri (meaning “Nine Nights”) is one of the most revered and vibrant Hindu festivals, celebrated to honor the Divine Feminine energy — Goddess Durga and her nine forms (Navadurga). It is observed twice a year:
- Chaitra Navratri (March–April)
- Sharad Navratri (September–October), which culminates in Dussehra (Vijaya Dashami).
Each day of Navratri is dedicated to a different form of Durga Maa, celebrating her power (Shakti), compassion, wisdom, and victory over evil.
🕉️ Spiritual Significance
Navratri symbolizes the victory of good over evil — especially Goddess Durga’s triumph over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. It also signifies the inner battle within ourselves: conquering ego, anger, and ignorance through devotion, discipline, and divine energy.
🙏 Navratri Puja Rituals (Daily Practices)
- Kalash Sthapana (Ghatasthapana):
- On the 1st day, a Kalash (sacred pot) is placed and worshipped, symbolizing the goddess’s presence. Barley seeds are sown around it to grow during the 9 days.
- Daily Durga Puja:
- Devotees worship one form of Navadurga each day with:
- Fresh flowers, incense, lamps (diya)
- Red/yellow clothing, fruits, sweets
- Chanting Durga Saptashati or Devi Mahatmya
- Offerings include coconut, halwa-puri, chana, and kheer.
- Devotees worship one form of Navadurga each day with:
- Fasting (Vrat):
- Many devotees fast for 9 days, consuming only satvik food (no onion, garlic, or non-veg). Some follow partial fasting by eating fruits or one meal a day.
- Kanya Puja (Kumari Puja):
- On the 8th or 9th day, nine young girls (representing the Navadurga) are worshipped and offered food, clothes, bangles, and gifts.
- Aarti and Bhajans:
- Daily morning and evening aartis are performed with devotional songs and garba/dandiya dance in many regions.
