Durga Puja is one of the most vibrant and widely celebrated Hindu festivals, especially in West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Bihar, and other parts of eastern India. It honors Goddess Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil and the divine feminine power (Shakti).
It usually takes place in the Hindu month of Ashwin (September–October) and lasts for 10 days, with the last five days being the most important.

Durga Puja celebrates the divine energy that protects righteousness and destroys evil. Goddess Durga is worshipped as the embodiment of power, wisdom, motherhood, and protection.
According to mythology, the gods created Durga to defeat the powerful demon Mahishasura who could not be defeated by any man or god. She fought for nine nights and killed him on the tenth day, which is celebrated as Vijaya Dashami.

- Mahalaya: Marks the beginning of the festival when Goddess Durga is invited to descend to Earth.
- Saptami (7th day): The idol is infused with life through the ritual of Pran Pratishtha.
- Ashtami (8th day): The most sacred day, when devotees perform the grand Sandhi Puja, symbolic of the moment when Durga defeated Mahishasura.
- Navami (9th day): Offerings, special prayers, and Havan (sacred fire ritual) are performed.
- Vijaya Dashami (10th day): The idols are taken in grand processions and immersed in rivers or water bodies. It marks the end of evil and the return of the goddess to her celestial home.
