π Significance:
Upanayan Sanskar, also known as Janeu Sanskar or the sacred thread ceremony, is one of the most important Hindu Sanskars (rites of passage). It marks the initiation of a young boy into formal education and spiritual learning (Brahmacharya ashram). The child receives the Gayatri Mantra from the Guru or Panditji and begins his journey as a dvija (twice-born). In Maharashtra, this ceremony is especially important among Brahmin and certain other communities, symbolizing readiness for Vedic study and disciplined life.
ποΈ When Itβs Performed:
- Typically, between the ages of 8 to 16 years, depending on the caste and family tradition
- For Brahmins: 8th year, Kshatriyas: 11th year, Vaishyas: 12th year (as per scriptures)
- Performed during auspicious months like Magh, Phalgun, or Vaishakh, and on days with good nakshatras (Rohini, Pushya, Hasta)
- Muhurat is decided by a Panditji after consulting the boyβs Janma Kundali (birth chart)

- Conducted by parents, especially the father, with full Vedic rituals led by a qualified Panditji or Guru

- Kalash, coconut, mango leaves, rice, haldi, kumkum
- Flowers, fruits, betel leaves, supari, sweets

- Cow dung cakes, camphor, sandalwood paste
