📜 Significance:
Saptapadi, meaning “Seven Steps,” is the core and most sacred ritual in a Hindu marriage. It signifies the bride and groom taking seven steps together around the sacred fire (Agni) while making seven vows (सात वचने) of mutual love, respect, responsibility, and companionship.

In Maharashtra, this is performed during the Mangal Phera (rounds around Agni), and only after Saptapadi is the marriage considered legally and spiritually complete. Each step represents a vow made to uphold specific duties as life partners.

🗓️ When It’s Performed:

  • During the main wedding ceremony, after Mangalashtak, Kanyadaan, and Vivah Homa
  • Performed in the presence of the sacred fire (Agni Dev)
  • Conducted by the Panditji who chants Vedic mantras and explains the vows

🛐 Who Can Perform:

  • Performed by the bride and groom only
  • Guided by a qualified Panditji
  • Family members, especially elders, witness the ritual and bless the couple

📦 Puja Samagri (Items Required):

  • Agni Kund (sacred fire) with wood, ghee, and samidha
  • Rice grains and flowers for offering during each step
  • Mauli (sacred thread) and Akshata (colored rice)
  • A piece of new cloth to tie the bride’s and groom’s garments together (symbolizing union)
  • Betel nuts, coins, and sweets for blessings
  • Mangalasutra, Sindoor (if not already applied), and Kalash for concluding rituals

🕯️ Main Ritual Steps:

  1. Preparation of the Agni Kund and chanting of Vedic mantras
  2. Groom holds the bride’s hand (Pani Grahan) and they stand side by side
  3. Bride touches seven rice piles or steps arranged in a semi-circle around the fire
  4. With each step, the Panditji recites a vow, and the couple repeats or nods in affirmation

    • 1st Step: For nourishment and healthy life
    • 2nd Step: For physical and mental strength
    • 3rd Step: For wealth and shared prosperity
    • 4th Step: For mutual love, respect, and happiness
    • 5th Step: For caring for children and family
    • 6th Step: For health and long life together
    • 7th Step: For friendship, loyalty, and spiritual unity
  6. After Saptapadi, the Panditji declares the couple as married spiritually and ritually
