📜 Significance:
Namkaran Sanskar is one of the key Hindu Sanskars and the first official ceremony of a newborn child, where the baby is given a name as per Vedic traditions. It signifies the child’s individual identity, blessings for a good future, and social acceptance. In Maharashtra, Namkaran is performed with Vedic rituals to ensure the child is blessed by the deities, ancestors, and community. The name is often chosen based on the baby’s birth nakshatra or astrology.

🗓️ When It’s Performed:

  • Traditionally on the 11th, 12th, or 13th day after birth
  • Can also be done anytime within the first few months, or during an auspicious muhurat suggested by a Pandit
  • Preferably during Shravan Nakshatra, in the morning or noon

🛐 Who Can Perform:

  • Performed by the parents, especially the father, with the guidance of a Panditji
  • Attended by close family, elders, and relatives
  • Can be conducted at home or in a temple

📦 Puja Samagri (Items Required):

  • Copper/bronze Kalash (water pot with coconut and mango leaves)
  • Ghee lamp (Diya), incense sticks (Agarbatti), camphor
  • Kumkum, turmeric (haldi), rice (akshata), sandalwood paste
  • Fresh flowers and garlands
  • New clothes and bedding for the baby
  • A silver plate, bell, conch
  • Panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, sugar, ghee)
  • Fruits, sweets, dry fruits, and grains
  • Horoscope or naming chart if available

🕯️ Main Rituals:

  1. Ganesh Puja – To remove obstacles
  2. Sankalpa – Vow taken by parents for baby’s healthy and righteous life
  3. Kalash Sthapana & Punyahavachan – Invocation of deities and purification
  4. Jatakarma – Whispering of name and mantras in baby’s right ear
  5. Namkaran Ritual – Baby is placed on the father’s lap and name is formally announced three times
  6. Blessings from elders and Aarti for the child
  7. Distribution of prasadam and sweets to guests
