Karthika Masa Deepa Puja is a sacred ritual observed during the Karthika month (usually November–December), which is considered one of the most auspicious months in the Hindu calendar. It is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Goddess Lakshmi, as well as to the lighting of lamps (deepas), which symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.
Karthika month is particularly significant for lighting oil lamps and is also known as the month of lights. Devotees believe that the lighting of lamps during this time brings peace, prosperity, and protection from evil. The Karthika Deepa Puja is mainly celebrated on the Purnima (full moon day) of the month, which is the day that marks the peak of devotion and religious observance.
On this day, devotees prepare by cleaning their homes, especially the puja area, and decorating their surroundings with rangolis, flowers, and torans (decorative hangings made from marigold flowers and mango leaves). The most important aspect of the puja is the lighting of diyas (oil lamps) around the house and in the temple. These lamps are placed in front of the Shiva Linga or idol of Lord Vishnu or Lakshmi, and prayers are offered for prosperity, good health, and spiritual growth.
During the puja, devotees recite mantras like “Om Namah Shivaya” and “Om Namo Narayanaya” while offering fruits, flowers, and incense to the deities. It is also customary to offer milk, honey, and sweets as part of the puja ritual.
Karthika Masa Deepa Puja is an opportunity for spiritual reflection, family bonding, and seeking divine blessings for happiness, wealth, and success in the coming year.
