Kumari Puja (also spelled Kanya Puja) is a sacred Hindu ritual where young, prepubescent girls (typically aged 2 to 10) are worshipped as living embodiments of the Divine Mother – especially Goddess Durga in her most pure and innocent form. It is most prominently performed during Navratri, especially on Ashtami (eighth day) or Navami (ninth day).

🕉️ Spiritual Significance

  • The word “Kumari” means virgin or unmarried girl.
  • It symbolizes purity, divinity, and the creative force of Shakti (power).
  • Worshiping Kumaris is believed to bring spiritual merit, blessings, and fulfillment of desires.
  • It affirms the honor and dignity of girls and women in Hindu culture.

🙏 Kumari Puja Rituals

🌼 1. Selection of Girls

  • Usually 9 girls are chosen, representing the Navadurga (nine forms of Goddess Durga).
  • Sometimes 1, 5, or 7 girls are worshipped depending on local customs and availability.
  • An additional boy may be included as Batuk/Bhairav, symbolizing Shiva’s protective aspect.

🧽 2. Preparations

  • The girls are invited respectfully and washed feet are welcomed with chandan (sandalwood), flowers, and aarti.
  • They are made to sit on clean seats, and their feet are washed with sacred water (as symbolic Padya Puja).

🌸 3. Puja Offerings

  • Apply tilak/kumkum on their forehead.
  • Offer flowers, fruits, sweets, and gifts (like clothes, bangles, books, or money).
  • Perform aarti and chant mantras dedicated to Durga or Devi:
    • “Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu Kumari Rupena Samsthita…”
  • Serve a special meal (bhog) with items like poori, chana, halwa, etc.
