🌊 Ganga Dussehra Pooja

(Worship of Goddess Ganga – The Divine Descent of the Holy River)

🌟 Introduction:

Ganga Dussehra is a sacred Hindu festival celebrated to commemorate the divine descent of River Ganga from the heavens to Earth. It falls on the Dashami (10th day) of the waxing moon in the month of Jyeshtha (May–June).

This occasion is especially revered in North India, particularly in Haridwar, Rishikesh, Varanasi, and Prayagraj, where devotees gather to take a holy dip in the river and offer prayers to Maa Ganga, the embodiment of purity, compassion, and divine grace.

🕉️ Spiritual Significance:

  • Ganga is not just a river — she is a Goddess, the personification of divine purity and a source of spiritual liberation.
  • Bathing in the Ganga on this day is said to cleanse ten types of sins (Dasha Paapa) committed knowingly or unknowingly.
  • Worship of Maa Ganga brings mental peace, spiritual upliftment, and karmic cleansing.

🙏 Purpose of Ganga Dussehra Pooja:

  • To honor Goddess Ganga’s descent to Earth.
  • To purify the body, mind, and soul of all past sins.
  • To seek blessings for health, harmony, and liberation (moksha).
  • To offer gratitude for the life-sustaining waters and seek forgiveness for polluting rivers.

  • Read stories from the Skanda Purana, which describes Ganga’s descent.
  • Avoid anger, gossip, or any harmful speech; maintain a day of peaceful, satvik conduct.

📖 The Story of Ganga’s Descent:

King Bhagiratha performed intense penance to bring Ganga down to earth to liberate the souls of his ancestors. Lord Shiva caught her mighty descent in his matted locks, softening her flow to prevent destruction.

Thus, Ganga became the bridge between heaven and earth, bringing moksha to all beings who worship her with devotion.

🌈 Conclusion:

Ganga Dussehra is not just a celebration — it is a sacred reminder that divine grace flows constantly, just like the river. To honor Ganga is to honor purity, selflessness, and the eternal flow of life.

By performing Ganga Dussehra Pooja with faith, one opens the heart to divine purification, ancestral blessings, and inner awakening.
