🌑 Pitru Paksha Pooja

(Sacred Ancestral Worship – Honoring the Departed Souls)

🌟 Introduction:

Pitru Paksha is a solemn and sacred 15-day period in the Hindu calendar dedicated to honoring one’s ancestors (Pitrus). It usually falls during the Krishna Paksha (waning phase) of the lunar month of Bhadrapada or Ashwin (September–October).

This period is especially meant for performing Shraddha rituals, Tarpana (offering water and sesame), and Pind Daan (offering food balls) to ensure peace and liberation of ancestral souls. It is believed that during this time, the departed souls visit the earth plane to receive offerings and blessings from their descendants.

🕉️ Spiritual Significance:

  • “Pitru” means forefathers and “Paksha” means fortnight.
  • The rituals help satisfy, liberate, and uplift the departed souls.
  • They also remove Pitru Dosha (ancestral karmic blockages), ensuring peace, prosperity, and harmony in the family.
  • Expresses gratitude and reverence to those who gave us life, culture, and heritage.

🙏 Purpose of Pitru Paksha Pooja:

  • To seek ancestral blessings for health, wealth, and spiritual progress.
  • To fulfill the sacred debt (Pitru Rina) towards ancestors.
  • To help the soul evolve and attain moksha.
  • To create positive family karma and remove generational obstacles.

🛕 Pitru Paksha Pooja Vidhi (Ritual Procedure)

🌺 1. Preparations:

  • Choose a peaceful, clean space, ideally near water or in a pooja room.
  • Prepare black sesame seeds, white rice, darbha grass, kusha, tulsi leaves, and a photo or symbolic presence of ancestors (can be represented by a silver or copper plate with water).
  • Cook satvik food (no onion/garlic/meat) for offerings.

🪔 2. Sankalp (Resolve):

Take water in your right palm, close your eyes, and say:

“I, [Your Name], son/daughter of [Father’s Name], perform this Pooja with faith and love, for the peace and upliftment of all known and unknown ancestors from both maternal and paternal sides.”

Offer the water to the ground or a plant.

🌊 3. Tarpana (Water Offering):

This is the core ritual:

  • Sit facing south (the direction of ancestors).
  • Take black sesame seeds, rice, and water in your palm or spoon.
  • Offer the mixture three times while chanting:

“Om Pitrubhyah Swadha Namah”
(Obeisance to the ancestors; may they be satisfied.)

  • Offer it for:
    • Departed father and forefathers
    • Departed mother and foremothers
    • Unmarried/unremembered souls
    • All unknown ancestors

🍚 4. Pinda Daan (Offering Rice Balls):

Form small balls from cooked rice, black sesame, ghee, and honey. Offer them with devotion on a banana leaf or clean surface.

Chant:

“Pitaro Modantam” – May the ancestors be pleased.

This is a symbolic gesture of providing food and sustenance to the souls.

🥣 5. Naivedyam and Food Offering:

Offer a plate with:

  • Cooked rice
  • Kheer or payasam
  • Vegetables (without onion/garlic)
  • Fruits and jaggery
  • Water

Place a small portion of each item as an offering to the ancestors before eating.

🕯️ 6. Prayer and Aarti:

Light a lamp and incense, and chant:

“Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya”
or
“Sarve Pitrubhyo Namah”

Pray silently for:

  • Their peace and elevation
  • Forgiveness for any unintentional neglect
  • Protection and blessings for the family

Perform a simple aarti to the symbolic image or direction of ancestors (south).

🌿 7. Feeding and Charity (Pitru Seva):

  • Feed crows, cows, and dogs – they are considered carriers of ancestral blessings.
  • Donate food, clothes, or money to Brahmins, elders, or the poor in memory of your ancestors.
  • Performing annadanam (feeding the hungry) is highly meritorious on this day.

⚠️ Pitru Paksha Observances:

Do’s:

  • Perform rituals with sincerity, even a simple Tarpana.
