📖 What is Maha Shivaratri?
Maha Shivaratri means “The Great Night of Shiva.” It falls on the 14th night (Chaturdashi) of the Krishna Paksha (waning moon) in the month of Phalguna/Magha (February–March). This is the most auspicious night dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Supreme Consciousness and the destroyer of ignorance.
It symbolizes the union of Shiva and Shakti, the awakening of inner wisdom, and the dissolution of darkness.

🏠 Preparations for Maha Shivaratri Pooja:
🧹 Before the Pooja:
- Clean the home and pooja space thoroughly.
- Set up a serene altar with:
- Shiva Lingam or idol/picture of Lord Shiva
- Decorate with bilva (bael) leaves, flowers (especially white), and lamps.
📿 Pooja Samagri (Essential Items):
- Shiva Lingam or image
- Bilva/bael leaves (at least 3 sets of 3-leaf clusters)
- Panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar)
- Ganga water (if available)
- Sandalwood paste, vibhuti (sacred ash), turmeric, kumkum
- Incense, oil/ghee lamps, camphor

🙏 Maha Shivaratri Pooja Vidhi (Step-by-Step Worship):
🌅 Morning Rituals:
- Take a holy bath early in the morning.
- Observe fasting (vrat) – nirjala (without water) or with fruits/milk.
- Offer prayers to Shiva Lingam at home or visit a temple.
🌙 Main Pooja (Evening and Night):
1. Sankalp (Sacred Vow):
- Light a diya and take a vow to observe Shivaratri fast and night vigil with devotion.
- Chant:
“Om Namah Shivaya”
2. Abhishekam (Ritual Bathing of Shiva Lingam):
Perform Abhishekam using the following items:
