Vijayadashami Ayudha Puja is a significant ritual observed on Dussehra (Vijayadashami), the tenth day of the Navaratri festival, celebrating the victory of good over evil. This day marks the triumph of Lord Rama over Ravana and the victory of Durga over the demon Mahishasura. It also symbolizes the power of knowledge, wisdom, and strength. On this day, the tradition of Ayudha Puja is observed, where tools, weapons, books, and instruments are worshipped.
Ayudha Puja (literally “worship of tools”) is performed to honor all the implements and devices that are used in daily life and work. It is believed that these tools, whether they are weapons, machines, vehicles, books, or instruments, are blessed by the divine energies they represent. The puja seeks to invoke divine blessings for success, protection, and smooth functioning in all work-related endeavors.
The ritual begins with cleaning and decorating the items to be worshipped. Vehicles, machinery, weapons, books, and instruments are arranged on the altar, and flowers, incense, and lamps are offered. Sweets and coconuts are placed as offerings. Devotees chant mantras, especially Durga Stotra, Shiva Ashtakshara Mantra, and other auspicious hymns to invoke blessings from Goddess Durga, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Ganesha for prosperity, knowledge, and protection.
Many businesses, factories, and even schools participate in Ayudha Puja, as it is considered a day to acknowledge the tools that help in daily life and contribute to one’s work or profession. Books are especially revered by students and scholars, and computers and other gadgets are worshipped by tech enthusiasts.
The day concludes with Aarti and prayers for success, knowledge, and prosperity. Ayudha Puja signifies the importance of hard work, tools, and the divine forces that empower them.
