Mangala Gauri Vratham is a sacred Hindu ritual observed by married women, particularly in the month of Shravana on Tuesdays. This vrat (fast) is dedicated to Goddess Gauri, an incarnation of Parvati, and is believed to bring prosperity, marital bliss, and protection for one’s husband.

Puja Vidhi (Rituals)

Preparation: Women wake up early, take a bath, and set up a puja altar with an idol or image of Goddess Gauri.

Offerings: Flowers, kumkum, turmeric, fruits, and sweets are offered to the deity.

Lighting the Lamp:  A special 16-wick lamp is lit as part of the ritual.

Chanting & Prayers: Devotees recite mantras and sing bhajans in praise of Goddess Gauri.

Mangala Gauri Vrat Katha: The story associated with the vrat is read or narrated.

Fasting: Women observe a fast throughout the day, consuming only specific foods.

Charity & Blessings: Offerings are made to Brahmins or needy individuals to seek blessings.

Pooja Items List

  • Kalasham – Copper or silver pot with water, mango leaves, and coconut.

  • Goddess Gouri idol/photo – Preferably made of turmeric (Arishina Gauri) or silver/clay.

  • Turmeric and Kumkum – Very essential.

  • Betel leaves and nuts (Vetrilai and Paku)

  • Flowers and garlands – Especially jasmine, hibiscus, and marigold.

  • Fruits – 5 or 9 types.

  • Coconuts – At least 2 (one for kalasham, one for offering).

  • Rice and Akshata (colored rice)

  • Deepam (Oil Lamp) – Ghee or sesame oil-based.

  • Incense sticks (Agarbatti) and camphor (Karpooram)

  • Pooja plates and bowls – For offering items and arranging the setup.

  • Blouse pieces and bangles – For offering to married women (Sumangalis).

  • Naivedyam (Prasadam) – Like Obbattu, Payasam, Idli, or traditional sweets.

  • Pooja book or Vratha Katha book – Contains the Mangala Gouri story to be recited.

  • Thread (Dharbe or Sacred thread) – Sometimes used for tying around the kalasham.
